Crafts of Christmas Past

Look at me go! I am fairly proud of myself, I have made five posts this month! It is a record for me and the time has come to finally post a few pictures of projects I worked on for Christmas.  I'm not going to post everything because there would be TONS of pictures so I will just post one of each general type.  Most of the gifts Eric and I gave this year were hats and slippers of varying colors.  They were a lot of fun to make but I'm pretty glad that I'm done making slippers for a while.

(Doesn't he look so cute?!)

On another note, lately, I've had a hankering to start some embroidery. There is one pattern in particular that I think is just gorgeous!

I think that when I eventually break down and buy the pattern from little dear's etsy shop I will do mine in blues and greens.  She has instructions to do the crayon tinting on fabric on her blog.  I think it is absolutely beautiful! I can't wait and I think it is definitely worth the $4.00. When did I become so cheap?

Tag and a Heart

I was recently tagged in my dear friend Bradie's blog! This is quite the honor, I've never done anything like this and I'm flattered that she tagged me. I am pretty new to this whole world of blogging, as is pretty evident in my total of 17 blog posts.  I like to think I'm getting better.  So, after my little post about my newest project, I will tell about myself and tag a few more people to do the same.

I have recently been in the mood to be making things, not just crochet, but anything.  I was shown this awesome website by a good friend of mine and I spent the next few days going through EVERY page of it and saving the projects that I liked the best.  I now have a folder on my desk top of hundreds of projects.  I will NEVER run out! And as oneprettything adds about 12-18 projects each day to choose from my choices will never get old either.  While going through each and every page, I came across a link to this great website and followed their instructions to make a little wreath for my door in preparation for Valentine's day.  It was very easy and very inexpensive to make.  I think it is adorable and I just hope it stays on the door, as it is literally hanging by a thread/piece of yarn.  Don't mind the chips in the paint and scratches on the door.  We are renting our little house and fixing up the door is the least of our worries!  I think the heart is cute and charming and it only took a few hours of wrapping yarn around and around a cardboard cutout of a heart.

Now for my answers!

1. if you have pets, do you see them as merely animals, or are they members of your family?
our pets, three cats, are most definitely members of our family.  They sleep and cuddle with us and we call them our children.  Even when Aly poops on the floor, or Vree tries to go out the window or Nim pulls down the garbage can to find a scrap of chicken fat or something I couldn't ever get imagine not having them.  They are absolutely members of our little family.

2. if you can have a dream to come true, what would it be?
a dream that I would love to have come true would be to be out of debt, to have a great house, and to have a baby.  basically my dream would be to skip a few years down the road and just be there already.

3. what is the one thing most hated by you?
this one is tricky.  I really don't like rude people.
4. what would you do with a billion dollars?
If I had a billion dollars I would pay off all of our debts, buy a house, put a ton into savings for our kids and for the rest of our lives, and I would travel the world.  I wouldn't do any of the chores around the house that I hate and I would read and make things all the time.  ahhhh if only.

5. what helps to pull you out of a bad mood?
a good hug usually brings me out of a bad mood.

6. which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?
i think that each is equally blessed but having both is the most blessed of all.

7. what is your bedtime routine?
I don't really have a bedtime routine.  I just go to bed when I'm tired,  some days it is earlier than others.  I just read or crochet until I'm too tired to do it and then I try to convince Eric that he is tired too. I'm definitely the one who likes to go to bed.  I think Eric would stay up all night if he could.

8. if you are currently in a relationship, how did you meet your partner?
we met through a long chain of events, but most simply, through friends.  We became friends before we ever started dating, although I secretly had a crush on him the whole time.  We dated long distance for almost two and a half years and then were engaged for six months.

9. if you could watch a creative person in the act of the creative process, who would it be?
probably my sister.  She is the most creative person I know.

10. what kinds of books do you read?
I read anything but I think my favorite books are fantasy.  I love being able to immerse myself completely into a world that is very different from our own.  I can completely disconnect myself from reality and just enjoy the story.  I think that fantasy books have a way of confronting issues that are happening in our world in a way that is not so obvious but helps us form opinions on the events that correlate with our own.

11. how would you see yourself in ten years time?
with a home and a family.  with a garden and possibly some chickens and bees.  I'm getting into this whole self sufficiency thing.

12. what’s your fear?
I hate spiders but beyond the fear of spiders is my fear of snakes.  Snakes are the most evil things in the world.  That and hippos.

13. would you give up all junk food for the rest of your life for the opportunity to visit outer space?

14. would you rather be single and rich or married, but poor?
i would rather be married but poor.  I'm already there and I wouldn't swap that for anything.

15. what’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
I stumble out of bed and into the bathroom to take a too hot shower to try to wake myself up for the day.

16. if you could change one thing about your spouse/partner what would it be?
no answer.
17. if you could pick a new name for yourself, what would it be?
I used to think that I would like to change my name but every time I tried to think of another name for myself nothing seemed to fit.  I'm a Kathleen through and through and I think I've gotten past not liking my name. It is definitely unique and I think it fits me.

18. would you forgive and forget no matter how horrible a thing that special someone has done?
that really depends on the person and their explanations.  the whole situation is relative.

19. if you could only eat one thing for the next 6 months, what would it be?

well... i'll have to go with chicken.  There are numerous ways to cook a chicken and because of that it would be hard to get bored of it.

Alright.  Now I will tag my mom, my sister Rachael, and my friend Breann

Chicken Fried Rice

A few months ago I was really craving chicken fried rice.  I found a highly rated recipe online but was very dissatisfied with the lack of vegetables, spices, and flavor.  I'm a big fan of garlic and ginger and I think they really add something to Asian food, especially the ginger, yum!  I decided to take my craving into my own hands and this is the recipe I came up with.  Most of the ingredients are approximations and the recipe feeds 4.

 Kate's Chicken Fried Rice

2 eggs
1 Tbs. water
1 Tbs. butter
1 Tbs. vegetable oil
1 c. green onion, chopped
1 c. carrots, finely chopped
1 c. frozen peas
1 chicken breast cubed
Garlic powder (to taste)
Onion powder (to taste)
Fresh or powdered ginger (to taste)
pepper (to taste)
2 c. cold rice
Soy sauce (to taste)

In a bowl beat the eggs with the water.  Sprinkle garlic, onion, powdered ginger, and pepper on chicken and cook in a skillet with oil.  Set chicken aside, keeping oil in the skillet.  Add butter and melt.  Add the onion, carrots, and peas and saute.  Add the chicken and more ginger and spices if desired.  Pour the egg into a corner of the skillet and scramble.  When it's finished stir it together with the vegetables and chicken.  Add the rice (cold to prevent it from getting mushy) and soy sauce and enjoy!

What's Your Motivation?

I have had a work out video since June that is supposed to be a 30 day workout.  I did the workout three times and gave up because I was so sore and I just could bring myself to bring on more pain.  Losing weight just wasn't motivation enough.

Seeing as this is a new year and for one of my resolutions I would like to lose more weight, I decided that I should actually complete the 30 day work out.  But I know that I will give up again within a few days if I don't have some motivation because, honestly, the losing of the weight just isn't enough when I'm tired and busy...

I have been trying to come up with something that won't cost too much but will inspire me to complete the work out.  I have no ideas.  Other than ice cream.  And if that is the reward, I might as well just go get a bowl now.

It is pretty sad that I can't think of anything that I really want, I'm pretty satisfied. So if anyone has any ideas on inexpensive and great motivators let me know!!

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Over Christmas break I've been trying out cooking with my slow cooker.  It has been a great experiment so far. Using the slow cooker is incredibly easy and the food has always turned out tasting great.  I just wish I had discovered how great slow cookers are earlier.  I'm pretty excited to get home from work and have dinner already ready for me.

I made pulled pork sandwiches last night and they were really good.  I might never get them at a restaurant again and save myself from the fatty pieces that I always seem to take big bites of and from spending the money.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches
1 two lb pork tenderloin
Salt and pepper
Garlic salt
1 12 oz. can or bottle of root beer
1 18 oz. bottle of barbecue sauce
Hamburger buns

Rub the salt, pepper, and garlic salt on the tenderloin.  Place the tenderloin in the slow cooker and pour the root beer over the meat.  Cover and cook on low until the meat is cooked.  Shred the pork using either forks or fingers .  Drain the root beer from the crock pot and return the shredded pork to the pot.  Stir in the barbecue sauce and enjoy on toasted hamburger buns!
